Subsequently, the market has been dominated by pieces comprised of alloyed metals (mixed metals) such as sterling silver and 18K gold. While these can still make beautiful pieces of jewelry, their impurity means that these pieces rarely retain their value. Much like buying a new car off the lot, jewelry made with alloyed metals may lose half, if not more, of their value as soon as they're purchased. This is especially the case with jewelry pieces that are low karat grades or lack other features that help add to their overall value.
