How To Choose the Right Chain or Necklace Length

How To Choose the Right Chain or Necklace Length

| Meridia Kuehn
What necklace lengths are most common? How do you measure your neck to order the perfect necklace length? Read the answers here.

Need help choosing the right length for your new necklace or chain? Below is the length chart to give you a rough estimate, although it’s always best to measure your neck as a starting point.

When measuring your neck, it’s best to use a measuring tape or non-stretch material which you then lay flat to measure. Don’t measure tight against your skin. Even if you’re ordering a choker length neck chain, you don’t want it to be intolerable to wear. The extra bit of ease you give to your measurement will be added comfort in your final chain length. If you have a chain at home that is already the length you’d like, measure that piece for your reference.

When selecting your chain length, consider if the links lay flat. If the chain is designed to lay completely flat, it’s likely to look its best at a shorter length. The shorter length allows the chain to sit closer to your body with minimal movement. The chain will still look great at a longer length, you just may find yourself adjusting it more often since it swings easier as you move.

The most common necklace lengths are 18”, 20”, and 24”. Choker length chains are usually 14” or 16” and it’s critical to get the length for these precise since they can be uncomfortable. At Timio, we’re more than happy to craft custom length chains, so please feel free to send us a Custom Inquiry.

Unusual chain lengths, such as 30” and longer, can double as a belt if you so desire. An extra small to small size belt is approximately 30”, a medium belt is around 36”, a large belt is about 40”, and so on. If you’d like a chain as a belt, send us a Custom Inquiry and we’d love to tackle the task for you.
