Packing for a trip or repacking for the journey home can lead to things getting jumbled. Avoid losing track of your jewelry and keep things organized with these four tips from the Timio team.
#1 - Never Put Jewelry In A Checked Bag
Always keep your jewelry in your carry-on bag with you. It doesn’t matter if you’re packing for a long or short trip, it’s always best to keep your valuables close at hand. Even if you end up checking your bag at your gate for convenience, make sure your jewelry is in the bag you’ll have with you during your flight. Not only does this avoid potential theft or loss, it also helps avoid potential damage that can occur when your bag is handled or loaded into the cargo hold below.
#2 - Dos and Don'ts of Storage
Avoid storing your jewelry in tins, hard cases, or containers that don’t have interior linings. Just like you would store your jewelry in a pouch or jewelry box at home, you should carry your pieces in a soft pouch or cushioned case while traveling. If you’re using a makeshift container, lining it with cotton or velvet made of natural fibers will help protect your pieces from getting rattled around or scratched by the case. Multiple pieces being stored in one container still risk getting scratched against each other if they’re not wrapped individually.
We’ve seen people use pill organizers or contact cases to store small earrings and rings, which are great for keeping small items contained and separated. We don’t recommend you use any container that could be mistaken for something else or, worse, tossed out by accident.
#3 - Jewelry Organizers
For those who aren’t fans of pouches or travel-sized jewelry boxes, we recommend trying jewelry rolls. They’re a great way to keep your jewelry organized into separate areas, are easy to open and close, and are distinguishable from other items in your bag. Some have snap straps to help hold necklaces in place, others have a ring holder that snaps into place, and some have zipper pockets as well.
#4 - Avoiding Harmful "Hacks"
Not all “hacks” are helpful, some can even be harmful. It’s understandable to want to protect your earring posts from getting bent during travel, but using foam plates, erasers, wine corks, or emptied lip balm containers to hold/store your earrings is unwise. You’re likely to mistake them as pieces of garbage since who keeps pieces of sealing wrap and foam plates in their bag. It’s also challenging to clean these items thoroughly to make sure you’re not exposing yourself to chemicals or irritants that will agitate your skin. After all, you do put earrings through your ears, which makes it much harder to clean out or soothe the areas once irritated. It’s best to invest in a safe and sensible storage solution for your home and for travel. Mini jewelry cases can cost as little as $15 and when it prevents your jewelry from getting scratched or irritating your skin, you’ll agree that it was worth it.
